Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?
When the Affordable Care Act was signed into law the term evidence-based practice (EBP) was coined. Sense then EBP has been known as the gold standard for guiding health care practice. As defined by Segen’s Medical Dictionary (2011) Evidence-Based Practice is “the practice of medicine based on information gathered by a systematic and critical review of publication literature”. In addition, one must also gather information from patient assessments, laboratory data, patient outcomes, and the patient’s perspective and values to guide practice change (Melnyk Fineout-Overholt, Stillwell, & Williamson, 2010).

The American Psychiatric Nurse Association (APNA) was founded in 1986 and has grown to be the largest professional organization specializing in psychiatric-mental health (American Psychiatric Nurse Association, n.d.). Their vision is to facilitate professional advancement, provide high quality continuing education, provide resources for mental health care providers, and establish a community of collaboration among providers (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, n.d.).

To assess the use of EBP by the APNA I used the patient population of interest (P), interventions or area of interest (I), comparison intervention (C), outcomes (O) and time (T) PICOT format (Melnyk el at., 2010). Assessing different position papers posted by the APNA ranging in topics from seclusions and restraints to the future of nursing using the PICOT format, I found the APNA to be rich in EBP. For example, their position on the use of seclusion and restraints reviews the history of restraint use, pros and cons, public perception, and recommendations for the use of restraints in current practices.

After reviewing the APNAs mission, values, position papers, and resources I have a deeper support for the APNA. Their vision of empowerment, advancement, education, and collaboration has inspired me to research the APNA further and consider obtaining my membership. Another nice addition is the career center page. This page allows different employers to post opportunities while give professionals the opportunity to search for career opportunities specific to their mental health professional practice.

Evidence-based practice enhances healthcare quality, improves patient outcomes, reduces costs, and empowers clinicians. (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). The initiation of the Affordable Care Act allowed for examination of different ways to progress evidence-based practice. The government and states have fought for a very long time to come up with programs that allow for needed services for people with severe mental illnesses. At the same time, research and demonstration projects have identified evidence-based services that are useful. (Mechanic,

2012).

Per the American Psychiatric Nurses association there is a current challenge with the healthcare system in the United States. There is an urgent need to sustain evidence-based practice across the nation. A conference was held that focused on way to make a culture that will help move evidence-based practices into the front of care delivery. There has also been a launch of a research career through the association which is geared toward funding innovative research. Through this research these nurses hope to forth positive change in psychiatric mental health nursing. The APNA research grant can currently be applied for, up until March 2020 where applicants will then be awarded.
